HAHCA Founders
Burnest Carter and Michelle Mayfield have teamed together to create Houston Area Healthcare Associates ("HAHCA"), a provider of free and/or affordable healthcare services through examination, preventive medicine and educational activities. The management structure of HAHCA includes a board of directors responsible for overall policy and direction of the association, and delegates responsibility of daily operations of staff and committees. Ms. Carter and Ms. Mayfield bring their extensive patient care and medical and social services and technical expertise to the Association.
Burnest Carter, managing partner, has 23 years in healthcare working for various hospitals in the Houston area. She trained in Washington, DC at Howard University. Her main area of expertise is in clinical treatment of AIDS infected patients. She has served as Chair of the Physical and Mental Health Committee for Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a public service organization, for six years. Under her direction, she has held AIDS seminar for World AIDS day, helped organize free mammograms and faciliated and collaborated on mental health issues, bipolar and Alzheirmer's association seminars.
Michelle Evette Mayfield is the coordinating partner, has worked in Social Work since 1996. She received both her Bachelor and Master's degress from Prairie View A&M University. Her Bachelor's degree is in Psychology and Master's is in counseling. Michelle has worked and is working in several capacities in the Social Work arena. She has worked as a Clinical Social Worker, Patient Advocate, Counselor, and Program Coordinator where she has direct contact with patients through providing mental health crisis intervention, developed and conducted in-service serminars, workshops, and lectures, formulated treatment plans, and participated in the psychosocial task force. She belongs to several professional organizations, including the Texas Counseling Association, the Texas Association of Muticultural Counseling and Development, and Chi Sigma Iota. She is also active with her Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Zeta Gamma Omega Chapter.
