Following the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mission Statement. The Martin Luther King Workshop was established to multiply the number of youth emulating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King by embracing and practicing the values of non-violent conflict resolution and active community peacemaking.
History. Historic Phyllis Wheatley High School in Fifth Ward was the site of the first Dr. Martin Luther King Stop the Violence Workshop and Rally in January 1988. Approximately 80 youth were in attendance. Annually, 250 to 500 youth participate in this event. The first event at Phyllis Wheatley High School concentrated on the theme of Stomping out Violence. Each succeeding Workshop and Rally focused on multiplying the number of Peacemakers in our community.
Our Philosophy
"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character-that is the goal of true education. ~ Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." The philosophy of this initiative is educate our young people, to give them the tools by which to govern their lives and strengthen their community. It is with this number one goal in mind that this initiative has evolved.
Our History
Since 1988, the Annual Dr. King Stop the Violence Youth Workshop and Rally was designed to multiply the number of youth "Peacemakers" and "Peacekeepers" in vulnerable and underserved communities, in the spirit and honor of Dr. King and the peaceful men and women on the frontline to "CHANGE" America and the world.
